Finding that work/life balance…

So it’s safe to say it’s been a while since I last posted a blog!! The reason? I’ve been hella busy with work if I’m completely honest. Starting a new career and trying to fit in everything else hasn’t been as easy as I thought! But, I now understand why so many people struggle day to day with that work/life balance.

I’m making it my mission this month to try and balance my busy work life with social, gym and chill time…which sounds like a lot I know! But so needed!

I recently posted a photo on Instagram with a caption relating to finding a balance between everything in life and it got me thinking about it more. So many people struggle, including me, so I thought why not make a blog post about it in more depth and give you some tips that I’m going to follow myself too!

The term ‘balance’ is thrown about on social media quite a bit let’s face it! But what does it really mean to you as an individual? Because, let’s not forget, everyone is different and has different lifestyles.

To me, balance means finding that happy medium between work/revision and my own time to see friends, go to the gym and just relax! I’ve found in the last month I have been so focused on work and revision everything else has been pushed to one side really. It’s affected both my mental and physical health, causing me to have a stress rash, cough and banging headache for weeks. Which might sound crazy as I like to think of myself of a pretty chilled person, but obviously I’m great at keeping calm on the outside whilst my body is FREAKING out on the inside!!

I just needed to slow down!!

The fact that my body reacted to the stress in this way just proved to me I really need to take time away from work and do the things that I enjoy and relieve some stress. I had a month of on/off gym sessions where I felt tired and embarrassed about my rash, so the sessions I did have weren’t the best, which then just made me more frustrated and stressed! It was a vicious cycle really.

It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that what I really needed was to just stop and take time out, but I’m not the best at doing that either! Every time I didn’t go to the gym I felt the need to do work rather than just Netflix and chill! In the end, it took a while for my rash and cough to go, it’s only really completely gone in the last week. This is why, I’ve come up with a plan to help me find that ‘balance’ a little more and hopefully it’ll help you too!

Tip #1 Schedule time in your diary to do the activities you enjoy

Might sound silly, writing in your diary or calendar when you want to go for a walk, gym session or class and an ideal time if possible, but having that schedule to stick to during a busy week and allowing the time to go out and take your mind off work, does the world of good! But, at the same time, if the week changes and your schedule has to be altered DO NOT STRESS. Just re-arrange and fit it in where possible

Tip #2 Treat Yo’self

The simple things like having a bath with a bath bomb, putting on a face mask or just moisturising your body have such a positive impact on your day. You’ve taken that time out to look after yourself and make you feel divine, even if it is for half an hour. Book up that spa treatment you’ve been meaning to get, whatever it is it’ll make you feel 10 times better!

Tip #3 Breathe

We don’t just stop and take a minute to just breathe. I’m not a meditator but I know people find it really helpful. What I’ve found to help me to just stop and clear my mind is an app called ‘Calm’. You can listen to someone talking or you can just listen to the noise of birds, rain, or my favourite, the sea waves. It might sound like an odd thing to bring up because we breathe all day every day, but when you are feeling stressed, take 3 deep breaths to relax the body a little before starting a task!

#Tip 4 Don’t stress

I agree it’s easier said than done, but the more you can limit your stress levels the happier and more productive you are going to be. Like I mentioned earlier if you don’t stick with your schedule it’s really not the end of the world. I try and live for the day as much as possible as I’ve realised over the years if I think too much in advanced it makes me anxious and stressed! Living each day as it comes and not letting things get the best of you isn’t something that happens overnight, but the more you can try and implement it on a daily basis you will be reaping the rewards!

#Tip 5 Take time out!

Take time off! Again, I know it’s easier said than done, but honestly, work tasks etc aren’t going anywhere and they will get done at some point. I remember when I used to work in an office, I almost felt like it was pointless having time off; when you come back from holiday you feel like you have twice the amount of work to catch up on! But then that would mean you NEVER have a holiday…I don’t know about you but that sounds crazyyy to me! Taking time away from work to a different city or country alone or with someone, gives you the time to recuperate and get away from that screen that is overtaking your life!

I think that’s enough rambling from me! Hopefully, that makes you think a little bit about what your work/life balance is like and if you truly have one! If you have any tips please let me know in the comments below and come follow me over on social media @vikki_axell
