Are you finding that you are going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark? Struggling to keep motivated at the gym and would prefer to snuggle up indoors instead? This time of the year, in the cold winter months, it can be A LOT harder to stick with your exercise routine and avoid those Christmassy after work drinks. Finding the motivation to leave the warmth of your house to go out into the cold can be, well, not the easiest thing! But, I’ve got some tips and advice which might help you to get moving before you throw that dressing gown on!
The first thing which is going to help you stay motivated is planning out your week. Schedule in what days you are going to the gym/class/run and at what time. Be realistic about your planning, that’s so important. If you know that you have a busy week at work with a few lunches and dinners, and only really have 2 evenings and the weekend, then only plan in those sessions. Maybe you are going out on Saturday night, and most probably won’t go to the gym Sunday, then don’t add that session in. When you wake up on Sunday and find you aren’t as hungover as you thought you might be and decide you want a gym session, then that’s a bonus! Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to hit the gym or a class every day of the week, it’s unrealistic.
Maybe you wake up less hungover than expected on Sunday!?
Once you’ve got your weekly plan in place, you know exactly what days and times you’ve planned, plan some more. If you can set out exactly what you are going to do on each day it’s going to be less of a headache for you. I know, for myself, having someone programme my workouts is so much easier, especially if you have a busy work life. Going to the gym and knowing exactly what you intend to do is going to make you have a better workout. You will probably be more productive with your time, and let’s face it, you’ll be more motivated to go knowing what you have to achieve. I understand that that way doesn’t work for everyone. Some people like to go with the flow, which is fine!! But if you can have a goal or focus for your workout, it’s going to make doing it a lot more appealing.
Speaking of goals, if you aren’t working towards a specific goal try and set yourself a challenge each week. Whether that’s just going to the gym 3 times, trying a new class or meeting up with a friend for a hike. However small or big, give yourself something to work towards to help your motivation. Reminding yourself of why you wanted to go to the gym in the first place, be honest with yourself. Everyone lacks motivation sometimes but let’s not be thrown off the bandwagon completely! 1 goal each week, doesn’t have to be big but it does still have to challenge you to a point.
It’s officially the countdown to Christmas!
It’s officially the countdown to Christmas which means the decorations are coming out, or for some, are already in full force! Get out and explore! I love this time of year and I love the Christmas decorations. Every high street, shopping centre and street will be overflowing with Christmas glitz and sparkle! Grab your friend or dog and get out in the fresh air for a walk. Just think, you get to wrap up in that winter coat you bought in the sale! Take a coffee or hot drink with you and make the most of the dry nights with friends and family. If it’s raining there are plenty of market stalls and shopping centres which are covered too! Getting out in the fresh air will immediately boost your endorphins as well as being with good company, whilst getting in those steps, win-win if you ask me!
When the nights are getting darker and everyone would prefer to be snuggled in front of the TV, take advantage of emptier gyms and classes. Try that class you’ve always wanted to but is usually fully booked. That piece of equipment that everyone uses which is now free, go give it a try and see what the fuss is about. Gyms will be getting quieter towards the end of the year, so it’s the perfect opportunity to try new things without having the worry of finding a space with a busy gym environment.
Are there really any excuses?
If you REALLY don’t want to leave the comfort and warmth of your home, why not try an indoor workout?! There are so many workouts available online now there really is no excuse. You can search for a full bodyweight workout, yoga flow, ab workout and even specify the time you want to do it for! The internet and social media are endless, once you’ve found someone you like who keeps you motivated throughout, you can use them in the future. It is a trial and error kind of vibe, as you never know the quality of the workout. You might not feel like you’ve worked to the right intensity, the video quality and sound might not be the best, so you have to dig to find those goodens’. If you want me to do a whole blog post of my fave youtube/social media workout influencers, comment below and I’ll get that done for you!
Last, of all, don’t stress yourself out by putting too much pressure on yourself in this busy period. It’s the time of year when things are thrown out there last minute and plans can change. If you only get to the gym once or twice one week because other things happened, that’s okay, you are allowed to have fun and enjoy the Christmas festivities!! Just be mindful of food and drink, like I always say, have everything in moderation. Christmas can be a stressful time as it is, without the added stress of you ‘needing’ to go to the gym 5 times that week, hence why I always say be realistic with your goals but with them still challenging.
I hope that’s helped you to feel motivated about your exercise regime! Even if that’s deep down inside of you! Comment below what you enjoy about this time of year, I’d love to know!
