How to set New Year goals and how to stick to them!

‘New year, new you’? I’m actually not a fan of that saying at all, but, it’s thrown about a hell of a lot this time of the year!! The plan to start a new lifestyle on the 1st January is in everyones mind, and yes, the majority of you will start it that day as it feels like a fresh start. However, i do feel that every day is a fresh start. Everyone’s motivation seems to dwindle throughout the year, depending on what’s going on in your life. The January gym memberships increase, but the good intentions only last up to 24 weeks!! So i’m here to give you a helping hand in how to set your new year goals and how to stick with them!

First of all, write your goals down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere you will always see it! In fact, you could even write them down on your notes, screenshot it, and have it as you lock screen background (noticeable even when you are out and about). I know this works as i’ve left a book out on display for the last few weeks and it’s made me read it!! Your goals don’t all have to be fitness related. I’ve got a goal to get a new car and read more. But once you’ve written them down and put them out there it’ll instantly make them more real!

Once you’ve thought about what you want to achieve in 2018 as a whole, think about how you are going to get there. What are the stepping stones? Lets say, for me, i want to read more. What exactly does ‘more’ mean?? So be specific when you are writing your goals. I’d like to read 4 times a week for at least an hour. Doesn’t have to say a certain time of the day or anything to that extreme. But being a little bit more specific with your goal will get you closer to reaching it. I mean i could have left it with read ‘more’ and i could read for 20 mins twice a week, which would be fine, but for me, not enough!

So after you have your goals set and you’ve been a little bit more specific with each one, lets break it down even more. Start to think about the stages you need to complete before reaching the ultimate goal. This time of the year many of you are looking to shift some Christmas weight, if your goal is to lose 6kg by June, which is totally achievable, that’s your ultimate goal. How much weight do you want to lose by the end of February? By the end of April? If you have these smaller goals in mind it’ll keep you on track and help you stay motivated! As time goes on, you’ll find yourself setting new goals. If you’ve managed to lose 3kg by end of February you might say another 3kg by the end of April etc. Goals can change, even more so for the better. Breaking your goal down into smaller more achievable goals will make the ultimate goal seems less scary and more achievable. Again, write these smaller goals down, and remember, if your goals aren’t scary, they aren’t big enough!

I believe that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. I’m a bit of a dreamer! But when it comes to reality, you need to be realistic with you goals. I’d love to set the goal of ‘go to the moon by the end of 2018’, however…I don’t really think that’s going to happen anytime soon! But i could always learn more about astronomy and astrology, which may help me get to the moon…one day! Being realistic with yourself and your goals is very important. You don’t want to set yourself extreme high standards then feel defeated when you are no where near. Setting yourself more realistic goals will keep you working hard to achieve it. BUT, i’m not saying set yourself easy target here guys, keep that in mind! As i mentioned, you can always add goals throughout the year and start new ones. It doesn’t have to be a Monday, or a new week, or a new year to start something you really want to achieve, it just has to be now! Start thinking of the process now and make them first steps, you won’t regret it!
