Those amazing endorphins…

Exercising makes you feel better doesn’t it?! As much as some would hate to admit it who doesn’t feel better after exercising?? Yes listen to your body and do what’s right for you, but if you are just trying to make excuses to get out of going to the gym or doing your fitness DVD at home then stop right there. I know it’s dark, I know it’s cold but trust me when i say that once you’ve done it you will feel 10 times better.

Now for the geeky part. The science!! So, when you exercise your body releases a chemical called endorphins. These magical chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to morphine! You can’t argue with science now can you! Being someone who exercises on a regular basis i can’t deny that sometimes, yes, i just want to stay in bed where it’s nice and warm and not go to the gym. Yes, sometimes i’m not in the mood and would rather not get sweaty. But i know in myself that i will feel better after. I’m proof that exercising makes you feel better.

I had a bit of a rough day last week and what got me through? Gym. I know what you’re thinking. I love it so it would make sense. But in all honesty my mind was happier after i’d done something. I didn’t have a crazy session. I was stressed so lifting excessively heavy weights was not going to reduce the cortisol in my body my any means. So instead i thought i’d sweat it out of me and just do some cardio, where my mind can really clear. I completed a virtual spin class which was half an hour, then the fun really begun. I LOVE kickboxing. I’ve done it for the past year and i really do love love love it. I connected my music to the loud speaker and blasted my music in the boxing studio and just did my thangggg. It relieved any anger. It relieved any bad spirits from my body. Afterwards i was tired but i felt like something had been lifted off my shoulders! It might sound cringe because when i just re-read that it sounded a tad cringe but it’s oh so true!!

Even if it’s just a walk that you do. A swim. A gentle cycle. If your moving and exercising you will feel better afterwards i promise you that. If you are someone that regularly feels stressed during the week but find it hard to get to the gym or are short on time and don’t particularly want to get dripping with sweat then try a yoga class. They are great for relaxing the body and calming the mind and again it’ll release those endorphins.

I had a client who came into 99% of her sessions stressed. I could tell the moment she walked in she needed to get something off her chest. She wanted to get beasted so that she could feel better. But i knew that wasn’t going to help. Beasting can go 2 ways. Great way to let off steam or lead to no results and more stress. If, like my client, you are stressed a majority of the time, beasting yourself every session is not going to help. You are raising stress levels in the body even more. So our sessions were slower, technique focused and just more relaxed. My client would go home feeling better about everything. She had got things off her chest. Had a positive session and improved overall wellbeing. What more could you ask for?!

Do any of you suffer with stress? What do you do to calm yourself? I’d love to know so that i can try things your way or give advice where i can!
